| Luxury steam safaris in Southern Africa
Rovos Rail has organised two Steam Tours in gracious luxury through southern Africa. The 4 and 6-day Steam Safaris are unique long-distance tours of special interest to anyone who loves the subcontinent, steam trains and luxury rail travel. Both tours are steam-hauled for the entire journey, with two run pasts each day. The 4-day Steam Safari leaves Rovos Rail's Station at Capital Park in Pretoria for a 1,200kms-long journey. The train is hauled by historic Class 25NC locomotives through the gold-rich Highveld to the Freestate, stopping in Bloemfontein with its array of cultural & historical attractions. The Steam Safari then continues south into the Eastern Cape, calling at the Addo Elephant Park, home to over 450 elephants, as well as cape buffalo & antelopes. The journey ends in Port Elizabeth.
Play Golf or Chase Animals
What do golfers do when their regular golf courses get too boring and they've got far too much money? They head for southern Africa for a luxury golf safari, of course. Pricey tours head through Pretoria, Swaziland, Durban and Sun City, giving golf addicts the chance to enjoy 18 holes at five different courses. On the off days (or when you think your handicap's just getting too high), you can go on game drives and see some of those African animals everyone always raves about. Power Golf are the fellows behind these luxury golf and safari combinations, and they do provide a non-golfing activity every day of the tour for unfortunate tagalongs and uninterested golf wives. They claim to travel on the most luxurious train in the world, but perhaps the brand-spankin' new Trans-Siberian will be disputing that soon.
CAMP NATHAN SMITH, Afghanistan —
A bomb disposal expert from Nova Scotia believes his job in Afghanistan is safer than that of the troops driving the roads here every day. Roadside bombs, or improvised explosive devices in military parlance, have killed eight Canadian soldiers in Kandahar province since Easter Sunday. "Every time Im driving down one of the routes that they routinely mine or IED, its a crap shoot and youre rolling the dice," he said in an interview. "There are tactics involved, but the time and place thing is just indiscriminate." Like many plying his trade here in Kandahar, the man, from 12 Wing Shearwaters fleet diving unit, did not want his name used for security reasons. The military figures people who dismantle bombs for a living could be a high priority target for the Taliban.
Tanzania: Muslim scholars want Bakwata dissolved
FOUR Muslim sheikhs have insisted that the Muslim Council of Tanzania (Bakwata) should be disbanded for being unconstitutional. They proposed that all its assets should be vested under the care of the administrator general. A counsel for sheikhs, Prof. Abdallah Safari, told the Daily News yesterday that he has already lodged a notice of appeal against the decision of the High Court, which refused to disband the sole organ dealing with Moslem affairs. "We want to appeal to the Court of Appeal against the dismissal of my clients' petition, seeking for disbandment of Bakwata because we believe it is unconstitutional," Prof Safari said. The advocate further said he would file another application at the High Court tomorrow to seek permission to appeal to the Court of Appeal against the court's decision given on March 29, this year.
