Family safari deaths shock friends

One of the last things the Parker family did while packing up in Knysna and heading off on safari was write a note containing their contact details. "For all practical purposes we will be disappearing off the face of the earth from March 20th with no clear contact details or email probably until mid-June." At around 10.45am last Saturday, Kelvin Parker stood alone in the Zimbabwean bush with the crumpled bodies of his wife and daughter, who had been trampled to death by an elephant. Earlier that Saturday morning Parker, 54, his wife Veronica, 47 and daughter, Charlotte, 10, drove from their overnight safari camp, The Hide, to Kennedy 2 water hole in the southern part of Hwange National Park in north west Zimbabwe. .

The Payroll Site launches its online payroll service for Apple's ...

The Payroll Site has responded to requests from Mac users and has redesigned its online payroll service to work using the Safari browser. Safari 2.0 is officially supported from 27th March 2007. Until now, a Mac user wishing to use the system had to install Firefox, Netscape or Internet Explorer on their Mac.

Steven Tucker, Managing Director of The Payroll Site Ltd said: "Many of our customers use Macs and we take their views seriously. We have been listening to them, and they have overwelmingly told us that they want to use Safari." He added "Our site is all about convenience - saving time and trouble. We support Safari to make it that bit more convenient for users of Mac OSX, giving them the option to use their favourite browser."

The online payroll service provided by The Payroll Site is a modern alternative to traditional software packages and bureau style services.

Wild Africa romance awaits endangered China tiger

SHANGHAI, April 23 (Reuters) - A South China tiger, one of fewer than 100 in existence, took off from a Shanghai airport on Monday for a romantic mission to Africa that might help save the species.

The four-year-old male, known only by his breeding registry number "327", is to be paired with a young female of the same species in a South African reserve.

The idea is for the tigers to mix in a wild environment, breed and brush up on their hunting skills before being returned to their native habitat in China.

China's Suzhou South China Tiger Reserve volunteered the male tiger for the mating mission.

"South Africa offers land, expertise and prey animals, so it facilitates the tiger re-wilding in a much quicker and faster way," said Li Quan, founder of the charity Save China's Tigers.

Lead bullets under fire in California

In California, and Tuolumne and Calaveras counties especially, hunting is something revered by many generations, passed from father to son or daughter with a sense of pride and participation.

However, a statewide issue has come into focus that may affect the "heart of the art," by forcing hunters to use non-lead bullets.

The issue

In the early 1950s, lead was deemed by the state Department of Fish and Game (DFG) to be a cause of mortality in some wildlife, particularly in waterfowl (ducks or geese) and fish. The animals were ingesting fragments of lead from sinkers or hunting pellets, causing them to experience lead poisoning that led to behavioral changes, illness and even death depending on the amounts.

After years of political wrangling, in 1991 a nationwide ban was enacted on lead shot for hunting waterfowl.
