| Steve Austin Interview, The Condemned
MoviesOnline caught up with World Wrestling Entertainment Superstar Steve Austin at the Los Angeles press day to promote his new film, The Condemned, an adrenalin-charged action thriller directed by Scott Wiper from a script by Wiper and Rob Hedden. The Condemned co-stars Vinnie Jones (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, X-Men: The Last Stand) and Rick Hoffman (Hostel), and is produced by Joel Simon and executive produced by Vince McMahon, Michael Lake and Jed Blaugrund. In this action-packed thrill ride, Austin plays Jack Conrad, a death-row prisoner in a corrupt Central American prison who is "purchased" by a wealthy television producer to take part in an illegal reality game show. Brought to a desolate island, Conrad finds himself trapped in a fight to the death against nine other condemned killers from all corners of the world.
Don't settle for light speed; take Safari to ludicrous speed
Being the default browser installed with an operating system has its advantages; just ask Internet Explorer on both the Mac and PC side. Yes, IE once shipped as the default choice for Mac users too, back in the dark days of OS 8/9. And it was fast, too, faster than anything else available at the time. Today, Apple's browser of choice is Safari, based in part on the open source KHTML codebase and enhanced regularly through Apple's WebKit project. It's pretty fast, too, but not always. Sometimes, Safari can slow to a crawl depending on a variety of factors such as cache size or network congestion, or even how many tabs you have open at once. Sure, you could (and should!) switch to a better browser, but what if you don't want to? MacFixit has an answer. Today's front page is devoted largely to a guide to speeding Safari back up, including some common and not-so-common fixes.
SPCA battles Shearwater over elephants
The Zimbabwe National SPCA is continuing its efforts to gain access to nine elephants being 'trained' by the travel company Shearwater Adventures. The nine are the survivors of a group of 12 captured from herds in the Hwange National Park in November 2006. In a January 2007 press release, Shearwater insisted that the ZNSPCA's claims that the elephants were being mistreated were untrue, claiming that their training methods were 'willing relationship[s] based on mutual trust and respect'. The ZNSPCA has consistently demanded that the company allow them access to the elephants to test this claim. After legal wrangling, the ZNSPCA were granted a court order for the inspection, which has yet to take place after Shearwater refused access to their premises on the grounds that the ZNSPCA had not obtained the assistance of vets named in the court order at the company's insistence.
First Direct owns up to Safari hitch
First Direct has finally notified customers they cannot conduct internet banking using Apple's Safari web browser, a month after the bank admitted the browser was no longer compatible with the service. In a message on First Direct's banking site, Mark Mullen, head of marketing at First Direct, said customers cannot currently use online banking with the Safari browser because a new security process has been introduced at the logon stage. Mullen said: "Truth is, First Direct has never officially supported the Safari browser, however, up to the point where we made this security change, it was possible to use Safari to access our internet banking service." silicon.com Financial Services Get the latest financial services news straight to your inbox.
