| Hunting debate splits Kenya's wildlife community
NAIROBI (Reuters) - A controversial proposal to help save Kenya's wildlife by scrapping a 30-year ban on sport hunting split delegates at a conference in the east African nation on Thursday. Tens of thousands of tourists flock to Kenya each year to see lions, leopards, elephants, wildebeest and other wildlife roaming the parks and reserves. But animal numbers have fallen by at least two-thirds over the last three decades, and experts blame poaching plus human destruction of their habitats. Those backing sport hunting say it would preserve wildlife by encouraging better management and earning big money that could be ploughed back into conservation. It would also bring Kenya into line with neighbors Uganda and Tanzania, and with South Africa, which all profit from restricted hunting.
BOOK REPORT: Chuck Palahniuk's RANT
Rant is a total trip. Its about eight books in 300 pages, so Ill throw you a list mode to get you equipped on the themes. Wrap your brain around this, the topics Rant covers. Time travel. Governmental control. Immortality. Epidemics. Murder. Rape. Car crashes. Mythology. History. Okay, thats all I got, and Im sure Ive missed some. If thats not enough for you in one book then you might want to try out an Encyclopedia instead. Among this broad swath of topics lies the strength and weakness of Rant. The plot, VERY loosely, is of Rant Buster Casey, a bad-ass rebel werewolf style of human. The book is written from the point-of-view of alternating characters (with nothing from Rant himself), so youll get one paragraph from Rants mom, the next from Rants friends, the next from a Sheriff in the town Rant grew up in.
Emirates conquers local market
KENYAN travellers have shown increasing preference to enrol in Skywards, the frequent flyer programme of Emirates and Sri Lankan airlines. A recent study by the Emirates indicates that Skywards membership in Kenya is approaching the 20,000 mark. The programme recorded a 42 per cent growth in local membership in the year ending March 31, 2005. Worldwide membership of the programme has topped 1.8 million. Skywards offers three tiers of membership: Blue, Silver and Gold, with each membership tier providing privileges to its members. Members earn Skywards Miles as they fly Emirates, Sri Lankan or partner airlines, or when they use the programmes designated hotels, car rentals, financial, leisure and lifestyle partners. Emirates Regional Manager Khalid Hassan said Skywards has delivered true value to its members through unbeatable travel privileges and benefits.
InfoWorld publishes false report on Apple Mac security
"Nancy Gohring, writing for InfoWorld, delivered a misleading report yesterday on a Mac security exploit contest held at the CanSecWest conference in Vancouver, BC," Daniel Eran writes for RoughylDrafted. Eran writes, "In her defense, it appears likely that Gohring did not write the headline ["Myth crushed as hacker shows Mac break-in"] for her InfoWorld article, which described the contest winner as being 'able to remotely break into a Mac as part of a contest designed to illustrate security flaws in OS X.' That part was simply wrong." "Whoever did write the headline must have been smoking weed in celebration of 4/20, because Gohring's article clearly described a local exploit. There's a big difference between the remote exploits that made Windows infamous for its insecurity and a local exploit of an application," Eran writes.
