Aquarium takes visitors on an eco-adventure

If Jeff Swanagan had his way, North Americans would spend less time with their computers and cell phones and a bit more time getting up close and personal with nature.

Swanagan has welcomed families to the Georgia Aquarium since its opening in 2005, but this June will mark the first time that the aquarium is inviting the public to join him on a trip far outside its walls.

Swanagan, the aquarium's president and executive director, and about 15 guests are heading for South Africa.

And while taking guests on an international field trip is a first for the aquarium, it's old hat for Swanagan.

"I have done this for 28 years and I've gone all over the planet, taking small groups of people on wonderful eco-adventures," says Swanagan, who was formerly head of the Florida Aquarium in Tampa.

Wardens bust large poaching ring

When game wardens Dave Loewen and Randy Arnold received separate tips last fall about some poaching taking place near Canyon Ferry, neither realized that the case would end up involving at least six elk and 30 mule deer. But six months later, five Townsend residents and one Californian have had their hunting privileges revoked for a total of 54 years and paid fines and restitution adding up to $32,600."This was the result of a kind of snowball effect," Loewen said recently. "One call came in regarding an illegal elk from a witness that said this stuff had been going on for years, and Randy started to do some digging."It turned out I had received a separate tip on a case in Townsend, and both cases ended up being intertwined."It's those kind of tips that Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is hoping to receive more of through its "Enough is Enough" program.

The Disappearing Frog of Egypt

While the human population boom in Egypt continues unabated, there is a certain organism that is not so lucky. The croaking of male frogs has always been a familiar sound to the residents of Egypt. In recent years, however, the sound has all but disappeared. The once popular frog population has been steadily on the decrease. .
