Holidaymakers set to reap sterling benefits
Long haul destinations like South Africa, Dubai, Egypt and Mexico join Turkey, best value in Europe, as the countries where the pound will stretch further for UK holidaymakers this year. According to a travel money survey by the Post Office, comparing currency movement trends in 16 destinations, sterling has gained ground in three-quarters of the countries surveyed over the past year. The most marked growth has been in South Africa where sterling strengthened against the rand by nearly 21%. Post Office Head of Travel Kevin McAdam said: “The continued growth of sterling is part of a long term trend that has seen the South African rand more than halve in value over the past decade. In that time demand for safaris, Garden Route tours and Cape Town breaks has mushroomed.
Week 10 of the Tour d'Afrique Bicycle Race
Tour d'Afrique, the annual 12 000-kilometer bicycle race/expedition from Cairo to Cape Town, billed as the world's longest and most grueling bicycle race, has completed its tenth week of the 17 week odyssey, marking the official half way mark of the Tour. Hot temperatures and intermittent rain in Tanzania this past week created ideal conditions for the hard core mountain bikers as the spectacularly scenic dirt road between Arusha and Dodoma turned to mud. The conditions presented huge challenges for the heavy support trucks which were frequently bogged down in the muddy tracks over the past week. In 'biking heaven' the mountain bikers sped past the trucks beating them into camp each day by hours.

Western Cape makes strong showing in `Travel Oscars`
Cape Town and the Western Cape have racked up an enviable array of nominations in the 14th World Travel Awards, described as the Oscars of the travel industry, arranged annually by travel agents. Cape Town is the only African city to be nominated in the category Africa`s Leading Destination. The other nominations in the category are the Kruger National Park, Egypt`s Sharm-El-Sheikh dive resort, the antiquities at Luxor, the Serengeti and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and the Victoria Falls. The Fancourt Hotel & Country Club in George, Pezula Hotel & Spa in Knysna and Steenberg Hotel on the Cape Peninsula are the only SA establishments among the 10 nominations for the category Africa's Leading Golf Resort. Calvyn Gilfellan, Acting CEO for Cape Town Routes Unlimited, says the strong showing of hotels, spas, golf and conference resorts is hugely encouraging.
