Weird Nature, continued

Okay, so last time I was telling you about Rocky the Spastic Squirrel and Jonathon Livingston Flintstone. And that made me want to tell you about these hyper-organized, mini-coyotes that my wife and I see all the time. Check this out: We live in an apartment in San Diego that's so small our cockroaches are hunchbacked, right? That's the bad news. The good is that connected to the back of our McUnit is a large deck that overlooks this huge, wild canyon. Many's the time I've sat on my trusty lawn chair above this vast expanse of wilderness, and deeply reflected upon the wonder and joy of being able, via an electrical outlet out there, to keep a little refrigerator on my patio. It's awesome, the hours I can kill out there whilst hardly moving at all.

What regularly feels like my private canyon has afforded me views of so many different kinds of wild creatures that I scoff at those who think the San Diego zoo might have anything new to show me.

Fall turkey season becomes hot topic

During the past eight days, tens of thousands of turkey hunters have gone afield in hopes of connecting with a big gobbler.

Most hunters returned from the woods with only some memories, some lessons, and maybe, if they were really lucky, a handful of morel mushrooms.

But a couple thousand hunters were good, lucky, or both and ended up lugging gobblers from the woods.

By the time the season ends in mid-May the total kill will probably fall somewhere in the 15,000 to 18,000 range, right up there with Virginia's best spring seasons ever.

Yet some turkey hunters aren't happy with the way Virginia's turkey hunting has been going.

One of them is Richard Pauley of Daleville, who was among those hunters who tagged a gobbler this past week.

G. Chambers Williams III: Four-wheeling safari

The small Colorado River town, surrounded by majestic red rock formations, abandoned uranium mines, spectacular canyons and two national parks, attracts visitors year-round, most of whom come with their own four-wheel-drive vehicles suitable for negotiating the scores of off-road trails.

And for those who like to do their four-wheeling in large groups, the annual Easter Jeep Safari is just the thing.

Held during a nine-day period each year leading up to Easter, the safari attracts thousands of off-road-driving aficionados.

During the event, especially the last four days — Thursday through Sunday — the trails are crowded, the motels are full and the nearby campgrounds are swamped with tents, trailers and motor homes.

Some people like the big crowds and the camaraderie of four-wheel-drive folks that the Easter event brings.

/CORRECTED REPEAT*/TRADE-KENYA: East Africans May Be Stripped of ...

NAIROBI, Mar 30 (IPS) - Kenyan activists are fighting to retain cultural designs that have been developed in East Africa but are being patented by companies in rich countries. After losing the kiondo basket trademark to Japan, the popular kikoi fabric design is currently at risk of being patented by a British company.

Cooperation for Fair Trade in Africa (COFTA), a Nairobi-based body of nongovernmental organisations, is taking on the Kikoy Company UK which has applied for registration as the sole trademark owner of kikoi.

Kikoi is a colourful cotton fabric historically worn by men and women along the East African coast. It is also used for making bags, hats and household items including curtains, rugs and bed covers. It has also proved popular in western countries.
