| Monart Summer Camp
At Monart of Parker our mission is to create a comfortable, non-competitive atmosphere, where everyone can experience the joy of artistic expression. Each year we offer new projects as we explore each subject, work in a variety of media, and learn different drawing techniques. Monart camps are limited in size so that each student will receive plenty of individual attention. Download a flier here! Choose from 1 or more of the following camps: AFRICAN SAFARI: Grab your pith helmet and join us on a safari! We'll explore many interesting aspects of this rich continent. The other African conflict
The lives of wildlife, domestic animals and humans are interwoven in rural Africa. Without co-operation from the local people (who in the final wash are the custodians of the wild) the future of Africas wildlife is doomed. Intense human population pressure has confined game to small areas of marginal land. Conflict between humans and wildlife over land, crops and water needs to be addressed for the benefit of both. How can this be done? Several progressive projects are addressing this problem in southern Africa and where these have been implemented they are beginning to have good results. My experience has been in Zimbabwe. Unfortunately it is hard to know what is happening there since civil strife has caused a previously booming tourist industry to collapse. However, prior to the chaos communities living in wildlife rich areas were being encouraged to adopt a Communal Areas Management Program for Indigenous Resources (CAMPFIRE) that benefited both them and African wildlife.
Carmelia Haven: In cardamom country
As you wind up your way up the Thekkady - Munnar road, the wooded terrain clears to reveal a breathtaking spectacle of rolling tea and cardamom plantations. You have entered Vandanmedu, where you leave reality behind and step right into fantasy. To a person whose interests include spices and hill produce, Vandanmedu is an international destination in its own right. Perched 4000 ft above sea level on the Western Ghats, this verdant little countryside is the world's largest producer of cardamom. Also located here is Carmelia Haven, where you can celebrate your life on your own terms, at your own pace and to top it all you can enjoy a pot of cardamom tea! To describe Carmelia merely as a holiday resort would be a gross understatement. Nature seems to be so fond of this enchanted land, she has showered all her charms upon it.
Elephant kills two Brits
TWO British tourists have been killed and another seriously injured by a rampaging elephant in Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park. The attack happened at the weekend while the tourists were on safari with a tour guide, the state-controlled Herald newspaper reported. Tour guides usually carry rifles to protect their clients in the event of attack from rogue buffaloes, lions or elephants. Tawanda Gotosa, an official in the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, said the attack might have happened too quickly for the guide to react. .
Lord of jungle loses to backless cholis
AHMEDABAD: Think of a lion safari and you think of Kenya, where you cruise past growling African lions the whole day before you retire for the night outside a campfire with some percussion music from the bongo and a nice heady drink. But that, like they say, happens only in Africa. Gujarat could have had a lot in common with Kenya. Here you have the last of the Asiatic lions in the world but few know about it. They don't know that this is where you can watch a whole pride of lions lap up water on a quiet jungle night. These sublime sights, like the one on top, was captured by wildlife photographer Bhushan Pandya in the summer of 1998. The world's only abode of the Asiatic lion may have just lost out to the 'World's longest dance festival'.
