| Kruger rangers arrested for poaching
Two Kruger National Park rangers accused of poaching a white rhino and selling its meat are to appear in the Nelspruit Regional Court on Wednesday, the SABC reported. Sipho Mokgalaka and Lucky Khoza were arrested and charged with theft and hunting inside the game reserve in May last year. They allegedly sold the rhino meat to villagers. The two are field rangers at the park, but have been suspended from work pending the outcome of the criminal case. Sapa .
Shootings shatter an idyllic campus
THE VIRGINIA TECH Web site features a picture of two students feeding a flock of ducks on the pristine campus in the Blue Ridge Mountains. But last Friday, a bomb threat had compelled the school to close Torgersen, Durham and Whittemore halls - and cancel classes. University spokesman Larry Hincker said that a College of Engineering administrator called university police to report a letter containing a threat to blow up Torgersen Hall that evening, according to a report in planetblacksburg.com, a student-run news blog. Hincker had been asked whether the bomb threat would affect the opinions of prospective Virginia Tech students, who began two weeks of campus visits yesterday. "It certainly is not good news," Hincker was quoted as saying, " . . . although unfortunately these things are not that uncommon in high school .
Pet Foods May Have Been Intentionally Poisoned
(CBS) WASHINGTON Imported ingredients used in recalled pet food may have been intentionally spiked with an industrial chemical to boost their apparent protein content, federal officials said Thursday. That's one theory being pursued by the Food and Drug Administration as it investigates how the chemical, melamine, contaminated at least two ingredients used to make more than 100 brands of dog and cat foods. In California, state agriculture officials placed a hog farm under quarantine after melamine was found in pig urine there. Additional testing is under way to determine whether the chemical was present in the meat produced by American Hog Farm in Ceres since April 3, the state Department of Food and Agriculture said. So far, melamine's been found in both wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate imported from China.
Tourist boats still off waters
RESTED: Boats of the District Tourism Promotion Council lying idle at Akkulam tourist village. Photo: C. Ratheesh Kumar Thiruvananthapuram: Hundreds of tourists arriving at Akkulam tourist village, Neyyar Dam and Kappil beat a hasty retreat, as boat services have been suspended in the three picnic spots for over a month. With schools closed for summer vacation, these tourist spots are witnessing a steady flow of domestic tourists. Most of them return on coming to know that boat rides are not possible. The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) now finds it difficult to make ends meet, as the boat services in these places had been its main source of income. The average daily collections from its boat clubs in the three places were above Rs. 7,000. The services were suspended on February 21 following a boat capsize in the Bhoothathankettu reservoir, off the Thattekkad bird sanctuary, in Ernakulam district, drowning 15 children and three teachers.
