Athletics: Patrick Makau breaks course record, Benita Johnson wins ...

Patrick Makau Musyoki of Kenya brought the crowning moment to the 27th Vattenfall BERLIN HALF MARATHON with a new course record of 58:56. The 22-year-old improved by eleven seconds the course record of his compatriot Paul Kosgei, set only the previous year, running the fourth fastest half-marathon of all time for good measure. The Australian Benita Johnson won the womens title in 68:47 with Irina Mikitenko of the German club TV Wattenscheid second in 69:46.

The event organisers SCC-RUNNING recorded a total of 22,048 participants from 70 countries, watched by 150,000 spectators along the route in warm but overall good conditions. A year ago 20,419 took part. The figure consisted of 18,531 runners in the half-marathon, 1,711 inline skaters, 22 handbikers and nine wheelchair competitors.

Japanese hurt in Jakarta air mishap

JAKARTA (Kyodo) Three people including a Japanese trainee were hurt when their Cessna 172-P made an emergency landing in an empty lot on the outskirts of Jakarta.

Ibnu Safari, an instructor at the Alfa Flying School, said that Sadao Tokusho, 41, suffered a light injury in the Saturday incident.

"He only suffered a bruise on his nose. He is undergoing flight training here in Indonesia," Safari said.

Pilot-instructor Bangkit S, who made the emergency landing, was also hurt, as was the third person on board.

Safari said the plane suddenly lost power during a training flight. Weather conditions were fine at the time.

"The emergency landing was good, but after the plane bumped into an embankment . . . the plane turned over," Safari said.

He said the flying school offers training for both private and commercial pilots.

Safari exploit found in Mac OSX hacking contest

Safari is to Mac OSX as Internet Explorer is to Windows and you know what, I don't recommend using either. Use Safari as necessary, when you need it but never any other times, the same applies to Internet Explorer on Windows.

I'll take this space to remind everyone of the fact that vulnerabilities in Windows and IE are far more likely to be exploited than one in OSX, still, OSX security holes do exist but there are those who play up these problems with OSX more than they should.

Mac OSX is known for its “rock solid" security with Unix at its core, but it still has flaws, flaws that are harder to exploit than say, similar exploits on Windows. That did not stop Shan Macaulay who won a MacBook after locating and exploting a zero-day security flaw in Safari so says Cnet. The MacBook in question had the latest updates but no additional security software or configurations were performed on it, in other words, what an average person would be using.

Warning over dumping of contaminated pet food

Pet owners must not dump food they fear may be contaminated with melamine because it might cause environmental damage or poison animals and people. The South African Veterinary Association (Sava) issued this warning on Friday and urged pet owners to return all possibly contaminated food to their vets. So far, 30 animals have died after a batch of food produced by the company Royal Canin (RC) was contaminated with melamine. "Owners must return all possibly contaminated food to their vets so that RC can incinerate it," said association spokesperson Gerhardt Steenkamp. "Dumping it in the refuse bin could expose the environment to the toxin, which could lead to human or animal exposure." Steenkamp said Sava was particularly concerned about exposed dogs that had not been seriously ill and would strongly advise owners to have their pets examined by their veterinarian.
