| Kenyan Farmers Want Land Open to Hunters
NAIVASHA, Kenya - For the farmers of Kenya, life is a constant contest for grass and water between their herds and the wild animals that share the land. Now they are waging a new struggle, this time against the international animal welfare lobby. Pleading poverty, the farmers want to open their land to wealthy fee-paying hunters. The advocacy groups are firmly opposed. The standoff has made Kenya the latest and perhaps most dramatic arena for the international debate over hunting and its role in financing conservation.A million tourists a year spend more than $580 million to see and photograph lions, elephants, gazelle and other wildlife on this East African country's savannas. But the revenue isn't enough to protect the animals. Only 8 percent of land in Kenya, a country twice the size of Nevada, is set aside for wildlife.
Plight of Albinos
One of the amazing, but little-known fact in Nigeria today, is the plight of albinos who suffer different types of discriminations. There are a total of 1.3 million albinos in the country who experience even more discrimination and deprivation than their traditional, physically handicapped or disabled compatriots in society. Albinism, for the records, is a genetic condition akin to sickle cells anemia that renders persons or animals unnaturally white in skin and hair, with pink eyes, due to a quirky lack of natural colouring materials or pigments called melanin that gives natural colour to normal species. .

On a grammar safari, learnings are a fait accompli
The Word Nerd, looking so good in khaki that it's just not fair, has returned from the hunt after bagging several impressive trophies. What kind of hat does the Word Nerd wear when he's on language safari? A pithy helmet, of course. In this, the Cramming-for-Finals Edition of the Word Nerd, we look at the many ways in which the poor, unsuspecting English language has been taken from its natural habitat and forced to carry heavy loads of redundancy and improper usage and redundancy. This episode is sponsored by the indefatigable guys and gals of the Nigerian Fraud and Scam Association, who recently asked the Word Nerd for money. “Kindly indicate your interest by responding to this e-mail so as to discuss all modalities," they wrote. .
Elephant tramples elderly woman
Phalaborwa - When an elephant charged an elderly couple on Saturday morning, the couple split up and ran in separate directions. The elephant chose to follow the woman, whose broken body was eventually found on Sunday afternoon. The attack took place at Grietjie near Phalaborwa, said Mopani area spokesperson Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe. He said Samuel Mbokoda, 73, and his wife, Aina, 68, were walking along a footpath outside the village at about 06:00 when an elephant came out of the bushes and charged at them. "The man ran in one direction and the woman ran in the other. The elephant stuck with the woman," he said. He said Mbokoda returned to look for his wife but couldn't find her. He returned to their village for help, and a search was organised, but she wasn't found.
