Kadhafi picks bone with colonisers of Africa
Dakar, Senegal 04/08 - Libyan leader, Col. Moammar Kadhafi, has flayed nations that colonised Africa, and accused them of plundering its resources only to leave the continent impoverished. "Colonisation, while causing a haemorrhage of Africa`s natural resources including raw materials and marine products, caused huge losses to the African continent in terms of its productive labour force," Kadhafi said pointed out in Dakar on Thursday. Speaking at a meeting with several personalities including writers, academics, executives of the ruling Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS), researchers and Imams, Kadhafi said the colonisers tried to turn those they colonised into morons and deliberately kept them in backwardness and perceptual denial of their rights to integrate into modern life.
Experts Debate Biotechnology to Boost Agricultural Production in ...
Experts from the Economic Community of West African States meeting in Ghana are discussing ways to use modern biotechnology to enhance agriculture production in the sub-region. Millions of West Africans suffer from food insecurity and malnutrition. Experts believe biotechnology can help the sub-region feed its population. But biotechnology is controversial. Advocates of its use say there is "widespread misinformation" about the safety of the technology. Over three days, delegates will be discussing plans for the development of biotechnology within the ECOWAS sub-region, as well as safety issues. Dr. Harold Roy-Macauley of the World Agroforestry Center is co-author of the action plan for the development of biotechnology and bio-safety in the ECOWAS sub-region.

In Jamaica, islanders held symbolic funeral rites in Kingston Harbor on Sunday for African slaves who died during the perilous ocean crossing. In Dominica, an evening ceremony was planned at the Baracoon building, where slaves were held for auction. In Guyana, a tribute was to be held in the compound of parliament buildings where slaves were beaten and sometimes hanged. "We unite as a region and as a people in a collective moment of reflection, as we remember one of the greatest tragedies in the history of humanity, which denied over 25 million Africans for over 400 years the basic human right of freedom, the right to self actualization and for so many, denial of even their basic right to life," said Ralph Gonsalves, prime minister of St.
