Marketing class kicks off Relay for Life

The Honors Marketing Practicum class hosted Subaru Safari as a marketing campaign for Subaru's Project Acceleration yesterday at Mockingbird Station from 5 to 8 p.m. The class, or marketing team, consists of 17 seniors and is instructed by Judy Foxman of the Cox School of Business's Marketing Department.

Mockingbird Station was filled with music from Kiss FM, and the SMU pom squad supported the team by performing every 15 minutes for an hour. Their act was followed by performances from three comedians.

Three Subaru challenges offered chances to win prizes ranging from iPod Shuffles to gift certificates to various shops in Mockingbird Station. With each entry, participants had the opportunity to vote for a Relay for Life team to receive a donation from the event.

MIDDAY BUSINESS REPORT: Block to sell subprime Option One unit

Kansas City's H&R Block Inc. this morning said it has reached an agreement to sell its Option One mortgage subsidiary to a new unit of Cerberus Capital Management LP.

After rising about 8 percent in premarket electronic trading, Block shares were up 83 cents, or 3.80 percent, at $22.66 at midday on the New York Stock Exchange. Shares traded as high as $23.62 in heavy volume of more than 5 million shares.

Block, the nation's largest tax preparer, said the deal does not include Option One's H&R Block Mortgage Corp. subsidiary.

Cerberus' OOMC Acquisition Corp. unit will pay the cash value of the tangible net assets of Option One Mortgage Corp. when the deal closes, less $300 million, Block said in news release. The company will take a pretax charge of as much as $320 million in the fourth quarter, which ends on April 30, to reflect the lower value of the assets, it said.

The scale of deaths of sharks in particular - about 6.6 million a year - has shocked researchers who have just released a major report.

The din of youthful voices fills the small exhibition hall at The Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. A crowd of tiny visitors flits between towering displays, and one rarely-uttered word is on the lips of this excited and potty-mouthed group: Poop. .

NEMC Cruise benefit sets sail tonight

CONCORD - Tonight, the NorthEast Medical Center Foundation will cruise to Singapore, China, Japan and Thailand to raise funds for the Jeff Gordon Children's Hospital.

For the past 13 years, the Foundation has held "Cruise Around the World," focusing on different vacations, including Paris, Hawaii, Rio and an African safari. This year's theme is "Cruise to the Orient."

The idea for a cruise came from the first year when the theme was "Come Aboard the Foundation," to bolster membership when the foundation was new, said Jim Monroe Jr., executive director of the NorthEast Foundation.

"As people were leaving they asked, 'Where are we cruising next year,' " Monroe said. "So we decided to keep the theme and pull into a new port each year."

It takes about nine months of serious planning and about 100 volunteers, said co-chairs Sarah Barker and Kristen Rogers.
