| NATURE GIRL: Mobile teen wins a safari to South Africa after ...
"We skipped dolls totally," said the 13-year-old Mobile girl's mother, Dr. Carole Boudreaux. "She was obsessed with bugs at around the age of 3 or so. "She loved all types of creatures, and wasn't intimidated by any of them." That fascination with nature has landed Madeleine a safari to South Africa this summer, the prize for being selected as a winner in the National Geographic Kids magazine's Hands-On Explorer Challenge essay contest. The UMS-Wright Preparatory School student is one of 15 students, ages 10-13, from the United States who will make the trip in August. They were chosen from more than 4,000 entries nationwide. "It's sunk in a little bit, but not a lot," said Madeleine, sitting on the porch of her home on Dog River.
Africa may not be all that dark!
MUMBAI: To an average investor, Africa is synonymous with teeming poverty, AIDS, the deadly tsetse flies, safaris... in fact anything but a market which could fetch healthy returns on your equity investments. According to a report by Wall Federation of Stock Exchanges, key stock markets in the continent offer a higher risk-adjusted rate of return when compared with most emerging Asian markets. A market may offer low absolute returns, but it could rank higher on a risk adjusted return scale, because the returns may be superior when compared with the risk on that investment. According to the same report, the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) — with a market capitalisation of $45 billion and 202 listed companies — is among the top three world markets in terms of risk-adjusted return on investments.
Transgenic mosquito could slow malaria transmission
It's the year 2050, and you're on safari in Africa. While scoping out the local wildlife, you feel a small prick on your arm and look down to see a mosquito flying away, just before your hand smacks the place where it had been feasting. "Oh no!" you think, suddenly realizing you forgot to get the malaria vaccination. "Don't worry," your guide tells you, laughing. "Mosquitoes haven't been able to carry malaria for years." You might laugh at this story now, but it may be reality soon. Researchers at the Bloomberg School of Public Health in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology have genetically engineered mosquitoes that are resistant to malaria. Malaria is caused by a group of parasites in the genus Plasmodium.
