OPEN SEASON: Tips on bagging that bearded bird

The spring turkey hunting season begins in just two weeks and Massachusetts hunters will be joining more than three million others across the country in hopes of bagging a longbeard.

The wild turkey is among the most wily of game, and many hunters only come home with stories of the one that got away. Part of the challenge is to match your shotgun with the right ammunition to make a clean kill when that big tom struts into range.

Experts at the National Wild Turkey Federation advise choosing a shotgun that's comfortable to shoot and one that you have confidence in. Shooting magnum turkey loads that kick like a mule can lead to flinching. And flinching leads to missing.

I prefer three-inch magnums in my 12-gauge double because of the dense pattern all those extra pellets throw.

SAARC rally flagged off by heads of states

The SAARC car rally, which has already covered some 7,000 km across four countries, was Tuesday flagged off by leaders of all eight participating South Asian countries as their regional summit began here.

The fleet of 30 cars reached the Indian capital Monday to a rousing welcome. They will now go Jaipur and Udaipur in Rajasthan and the India leg will finish at Mumbai.

From there, the participants will fly to Colombo Sunday while their cars will be shipped there.

The rally, which began at Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh March 15, will cover seven of the eight SAARC countries. It is set to culminate in the Maldives April 14, by when the participants and their Tata Safaris would have covered 8,200 km.

About 120 people from the eight SAARC countries are taking part in the rally.

Chomp came before stomp for early amphibians

WASHINGTON: They developed their chomp before they developed their stomp. Even before fully emerging as land dwellers, Earth's first amphibious four-legged animals attained a biting feeding style that distinguished them from their fishy ancestors and prepared them for a terrestrial existence, scientists said on Monday.

Thus, these primordial amphibians were better at eating like a land beast than walking like one, according to research by Harvard University's Molly Markey and Charles Marshall.

They looked closely at the early amphibian Acanthostega, which lived 370 million years ago.

"They don't capture prey like fish. They don't suck it into their mouths. Instead, they captured prey more like what you'd think of a crocodile doing or a lizard," Markey said in an interview.

First Study on Small Stock Industry Completed

Dr Jasper Cloete of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture (Cape Institute for Agricultural Training: Elsenburg) recently completed his PhD at the University of Stellenbosch. His dissertation was titled: "Evaluation of South African small stock genetic resources for production and meat quality traits". The study was completed under the supervision of Prof Louw Hoffman (US) and Prof Schalk Cloete (Dept of Agriculture: Institute of Animal Production).

The dissertation is the first comprehensive effort to evaluate the genetic resource available for South African small stock. Characteristics that were investigated included reproduction, meat production as well as wool production.

The study can be viewed as the most comprehensive study ever undertaken regarding the quality characteristics of mutton and lamb.
